Western Commercial Patterns

The following patterns are commercial patterns that can be used to create modest clothing - either with or without being altered. Some of the patterns are available for sale through Heartland Hijab; most are available directly from the manufacturer or common "sewing and craft" stores in the United States.

McCall's #3940 (2003)

This pattern is available for purchase directly from the McCall's website, though "out of print" and not available in stores.

View "C" can be made Modest by lengthing the overall length and widening / lengthening the sleeves.

This is a basic pattern that has no zippers, buttons, etc. The pattern is listed as "maternity", which makes it nice and roomy for everyday Modest wear.

Simplicity #2363 (2010)

View "E" of this intermediate skill level pattern makes a nice abaya when the sleeves are lengthened from 3/4-length to full-length. The pattern has many pieces and requires a bit of assembly, but the results would appear to be worth the effort!

Pattern 2363 is available in US sizes 8-10-12-14 (Medium) or 14-16-18-20-22 (Medium - Extra Large).

McCall's #6125 (2010)

A very, very simple pattern for your basic square style abaya. Traditional, loose, modest and easy to sew. The line drawings below give a much better idea of this pattern. For Sisters that are shorter or taller than "average" this pattern is very easy to make larger or smaller in width and height.

Pattern 6125 is available in US sizes 8-10-12-14-16 or 18W-20W-22W-24W although the basic pattern can be made to fit any size.

McCall's #6080 (2010)

This pattern is labeled as "easy" by McCall's. Easy to alter, the sleeves need to be made full length for Modesty; additionally, the top can be lengthened to fit as a very nice abaya. The flow and drape of the garment means that it can be used for daily wear or maternity.

The pattern is listed as "Very Easy", it is straightforward and simple to follow for the sewing Sister that has basic sewing knowledge. The "A" view can be paired with a full skirt or lengthened into an abaya. Below are the line drawings of the front and back of this pattern.

McCall's #6117 (2010)

Views "D" and "E" of this pattern are alterable for Modest wear by lengthening the dress entirely and the sleeves slightly.

A fairly straightforward pattern that requires no buttons or zippers (although buttons are named on the package for decoration) a sewing Sister with intermediate knowledge will do fine!

McCall's #4002 (2003)

This pattern is a basic caftan that can be adjusted for use as either a man or women's garment. The pattern also has simple pull-on pants, a cap and a small scarf with finished edges.

A sewing Sister with basic or intermediate sewing skills will find this pattern to be easy to follow and construct.
